Laura is a portuguese young jeweler who has a very personal approach to jewelry. And she is also a dear friend whom I admire.
She draws inspirations from things that are close to her heart and mind. Laura is very while meticulous creating her concepts and she cannot rush the process, she makes sure it stays true to her values.
Her pieces are usually clean and simple with a flair of her own personality.
To you, what is jewelry?
A possible future lifestyle.
What did you do before getting into jewelry? And what brought you into jewelry?
I was on the 12th grade. What mostly brought me into jewelry was curiosity. The lack of interest in other areas. Today I feel I made the right choice.
To you, what is the purpose jewelry?
To me, it’s a form of expression.
What, or who, most inspires you and your work?
My inspiration sources are diverse. I don’t follow any kind of standard research. Usually, and specially now that I still don’t need to appeal to a broader audience, my sources are close to me depending on my taste, experience and interest.
What do you love most about making jewelry?
Other than the creative process and it’s research that awake great interest in me, it’s the practical side of it, the constructing process, that I like the most.
What do you try to express through your work?
My own line. Which is more or less defined by now.
What materials do you prefer to work with, and why?
Silver is the material I’m most comfortable working with. Because it’s the metal I’ve used the most so far.
What keeps you motivated to continue in this path?
Personal satisfaction.
From your own work, what’s your favorite piece and why?
It’s hard to choose one. Perhaps the rough stone ring, because it was very natural. I woke up and that was it! And that’s how it was. Also, because it was one of my first pieces.
Which piece was the most difficult to execute, and why?
Everyone of them always end up being harder than I initially think. And for me, that’s the distance between theory and practice, which happens often in most fields.++
I will, though, mention another one of my first pieces, a pair of long earrings. Mostly because the final result annulled a big part of the fatiguing work.
I truly hope to see Laura grow stronger and present us all with fabulous collections!
I believe her strength lies in the fact that she doesn’t compromise her aesthetic and the pieces remain true to her identity.
