Are you one of those people that don’t really like doing sports? I know I am! Generally speaking, I usually find exercising kind of boring. Specially if it’s the daily maintenance exercise kind!
I’ve always considered myself lazy and a big potato couch. I enjoyed some random activity when I was a kid while playing and such. Or when, on rare occasion, the energy would strike. But that was it.
I once pursued Karate classes, and loved it, but surely not for the sportive side of it. It was more of a connection to a part of the orient, the original philosophy resonated with me… Okay and I was watching Dragon Ball at the time too! (Side note: I quit karate years ago for very personal reasons.)
The thing is, I do know exercising it’s good for my health. Recently, this past summer, I’ve tried it for a few weeks and indeed I felt a nice difference. I had less back pain and less headaches, which tend to be frequent. I was amazed, really!
But I didn’t kept at it for too long. Out of the possibilities, I choose an exercise bike which my dad had bought months ago for himself. Honestly, back then, the only thing that motivated me was that I was feeling chubby and guilty for the comfort food I was devouring. The results were nice, I felt a little less guilty in addition to the health improvement, but it was boring and troublesome.
I didn’t looked forward to it, I wasn’t motivated to do it. I think we all should agree that adding tasks we hate to our life is something to be avoid at all costs if possible!
So what seems to be the solution?
Me, I went back to Karate! It has even become therapeutic at times! But that’s my thing and I’m not telling you to do this too. I’ll just tell you why and how it has benefited me.

I couldn’t find anything else I could reasonably like. I was already familiar with it and some of the people, although I felt I had to regain that familiarity again. I also had the chance to socialize with a new range of people, which I desperately needed in order to keep my sanity!
So far it’s been great for me on many levels! And because I’m a bit lacking on social skills and am a proud lone wolf most of the time, the social factor here is of great balance to me.
Find out what it is that will fit your needs, beyond the exercise. Don’t focus only on the physical, use it to enrich your life and draw pleasure from it. Do you need sometime alone to hear your own thoughts? Do you need to surround yourself with people? Or maybe peer pressure drives you away from it. Either way, try to merge it with an escape.
Would a long daily walk, in the park or your favorite part of town, be your thing? Joining the gym with your best friend? Joining a gym where no one knows you? Enrolling in a sport you always admired but never took serious? Jogging on the beach with the sound of the waves? A bike ride at sunset? Claiming walls? Running up stairs? Anything!
You choose! It’s all up to you, your needs and what drives you.
